Judge Dennis Sweeny announced the former Anne Arundel County Executive’s sentence on Thursday. John Leopold has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, 30 days of home detention, 400 hours of community service, and $100,000 in fines.

Leopold’s prosecutors argued that he receive no jail time due to his age, but Judge Sweeny noted that jail time is necessary in order to send a message about the consequences of misconduct in office.

Leopold resigned from his position as county executive last month when he was found guilty of forcing his staff to perform personal errands and inappropriate campaign work.
