The House unanimously passed a bill to raise the maximum highway speed limit from 65 mph to 70. Del. James Malone, a Democrat from Baltimore and Howard counties, is the bill’s chief sponsor while several Republicans are sponsoring it as well. Thursday morning the bill passed in the House 133-0. The speed limits have little effect on how fast most people drive according to the Maryland Department of Transportation. It advises limits at or below the speed at which 85 percent of motorists drive on any given road and the Department of Legislative Services says that this bill fits within those guidelines. DLS studies show that there are only 11 states that have 65 mph maximums, while 22 have a maximum of 70 mph, and 14 have a 75 mph maximum.
