Apple sells more than 3 million new iPads in 4 days

On Monday evening, Apple announced that it sold more than 3 million new iPads over the weekend. The third-generation of the iPad was launched on March 16 and it has been the most successful launch yet for the Apple tablet. CEO Tim Cook flaunted the new iPad’s “record” weekend on a conference call with analysts on Monday morning. AT&T reported that the new iPad set a single-day record on Friday. The iPad launched in the United States, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia, France, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.

Although there are few significant differences between the new iPad and the second-generation iPad 2, it didn’t stop thousands of consumers from waiting in line for hours to purchase the updated technology. In New York, the line at the flagship Apple Store on Fifth Avenue extended more than a city block, and fans crammed into several corridors at the new Grand Central store. The new iPad’s most exuberant feature is a high-pixel-count “retina display,” which was previously only available on the iPhone. The screen has 3.1 million pixels, 1 million more than a 1080p high-definition screen of that size would. The new iPad will launch in 24 more countries on Friday.
