The men’s college basketball team at Dartmouth College made history on Tuesday after they became the first group of college athletes to join a union. In a vote of 13-2, the team joined Service Employees International Union Local 560, which represents other employees at Dartmouth.
The university appealed the decision to the National Labor Relations Board. “For Ivy League students who are varsity athletes, academics are of primary importance, and athletic pursuit is part of the educational experience,” said the university in a statement. “Classifying these students as employees simply because they play basketball is as unprecedented as it is inaccurate.”
