According to activists, ISIS militants have destroyed the Baalshamin Temple in the ancient ruins of Palmyra in Syria. Palmyra is over 2,000 years old, and the greatest fear of archaeologists for Palmyra since it was captured was that the militants might destroy the ancient ruins. Activists said that the militants used explosive to destroy the temple, and the blast was so powerful that it damaged some of the Roman columns around it. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the temple was destroyed a month ago. A Turkey-based activist has said that the temple was blown up on Sunday. The 1st-century temple was dedicated to the Phoenician god of storms and rain.
