Biden slams Trump during DNC speech

Vice President Joe Biden fired back at Donald Trump’s famous TV catch phrase – “you’re fired” – during a furious tirade against the Republican nominee Wednesday. “His lack of empathy and compassion can be summed up in a phrase I suspect he’s most proud of having made famous, ‘you’re fired,'” Biden said in his speech. “How can there be pleasure in saying ‘you’re fired?’ He’s trying to tell us he cares about the middle class? Give me a break!” Biden went on to say, “This guy doesn’t have a clue about the Middle Class. Not a clue. He has no clue about what makes America Great. Actually he has no clue. Period.”

Netflix releases first ‘Gilmore Girls’ teaser

Netflix released its first official trailer for its revival of the hit show “Gilmore Girls” on Wednesday, called “Gilmore Girls: A Day in the Life.” The teaser shows shots of iconic Stars Hollow locations as well as a scene in which Rory and Lorelai talk about comedian Amy Schumer. The series will premier on Netflix on November 25, and will consist of four 90-minute films that will cover one year in the characters’ lives. The show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, didn’t rule out the possibility of more shows in the future, but said for now, “this is what it is.” “We put these together, we told these stories, and now we throw them out to the universe,” she said.

Police officer receives award for rescue of injured dog

A local police officer won an award for rescuing an injured dog that ran away from a burning building. “Lucy and I almost got hit a few times,” D.C. police officer Doug Berlin said of weaving through traffic while chasing after the rat terrier. “Lucy is 11. But she’s a fighter. She runs like she’s two.” The dog had run away from an apartment building fire at 11th Street and Rhode Island Avenue Northwest. Berlin said he noticed the dog had burns and bloody paws as she ran past him. A man on a skateboard ultimately helped Berlin catch the dog, which ended up biting the man. When an ambulance arrived to take care of the man’s dog bite, Berlin noticed Lucy was having respiratory problems. “She was bleeding so badly, I didn’t’ want her to bleed out so I was like, ‘You guys we have to go — now,’” Berlin recalled. The ambulance took Lucy and Berlin to the nearby CityPaws Animal Hospital. Lisa LaFontaine, CEO of the Washington Humane Society and Washington Animal Rescue League, presented Berlin with the “Humane Hero Award” at the Third District police station Wednesday.

Prosecutors drop charges against remaining officers in Freddie Gray case

On Wednesday, Baltimore prosecutors dropped all charges against the three remaining officers facing trial in the death of 25-year-old prisoner Freddie Gray. Gray died in April 2015 after sustaining a spinal injury while being transported in the back of a police van. Three of the six officers charged in the case had already been acquitted. “Justice has been done,” said Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, said after the charges were dropped. Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said the decision to drop the charges was “agonizing” and she slammed the way police handled the investigation.
