In a soccer game held in the city of Port Said on Wednesday, at least 73 people were killed in a riot between the fans of the rival teams. The lack of law and order made the riot the deadliest eruption of chaos since the dismissal of President Hosni Mubarak one year ago. Members of the newly elected Egyptian Parliament reportedly accused the military-led government of deliberately allowing the aggression to spiral beyond control and undermine the revolution.

A senior lawmaker from the Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm, which leads the chamber, Essam el Erian said, “The reason for this tragedy is the deliberate neglect and absence of the military and the police.” Erian also accused security forces of “a plot against democratic transition.” He warned that “This will not pass without punishment, a thousand punishments.” An emergency session has been scheduled by Parliament to discuss the incident and will be held on Thursday.
