The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is preparing a new money-related exhibit. The museum has announced it will debut its new Gallery of Numismatics and the first exhibition, “The Value of Money” on July 1. The Smithsonian has one of the largest numismatic collections in the world and the largest in North America. The new exhibit will include more than four hundred items from the collection. Some featured items will include: a storied 1933 Double Eagle coin, a personal check signed by President James Madison, a $100,000 note from 1934, Depression-era $1 clam shell and some of the rarest coins in the world. Curators have also procured emerging monetary technology for the exhibit, including a small Square Reader used for mobile credit card payments.
