Election officials in the District of Columbia will be counting nearly 5,000 outstanding ballots, absentee and provisional, on Friday in a tight race for an at-large D.C. Council seat. The updated total votes will be announced after 5 p.m. After last Tuesday’s Democratic primary, Councilmember Vincent Orange led challenger Sekou Biddle by 543 votes. Neither has claimed victory or loss.

The Board of Elections and Ethics reported it received 2,163 absentee ballots form Democratic voters and more than 2,800 provisional ballots, which included votes from other parties. A victory margin of less than 1 percent would ignite an automatic recount. Currently, Councilmember Orange leads by just over 1 percent.
