The former District of Columbia Mayor, Marion Barry, has won a Democratic primary for his seat in the D.C. Council, guaranteeing him a third consecutive term representing the poorest of ward in the city, Ward 8. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting from Ward 8, Barry took 73 percent of the vote while Jacque Patterson was second with 9 percent. In nearly four decades since Barry has been in politics, he served four terms as mayor and has only lost one election.

For an at-large Council seat in the Democratic primary, Councilmember Vincent Orange held a small lead, with 523 votes or a 1 percentage point, over former Interim Councilmember Sekou Biddle. About 3,800 absentee ballots remain uncounted, but election officials will tally the votes 10 days after the primary on April 13. Councilmember Yvette Alexander, D-Ward 7, and Councilmember Muriel Bowser, D-Ward 4, won their primaries over multiple opponents. Jack Evans, Democrat of Ward 2, ran unopposed.
