Marijuana dispensaries in D.C. to receive state-of- the art security

In the District, medical marijuana growers and sellers will be obliged to take thorough measures to ensure their product doesn’t land in the wrong hands. Measures will range from state-of-the-art surveillance systems to panic buttons for employees. Applicants for licenses to either grow or sell cannabis were required to submit detailed security plans to the Department of Health and the Metropolitan Police Department.

The final decision, issued by the mayor’s office, set forth a variety of basic requirements. The required security measures the cultivation and distribution centers must have are high-tech motion detectors, storage safe that can withstand 30 minutes of drilling, 24-hour surveillance cameras, professionally monitored alarm systems, a panic button for employees, outdoor lighting, records and tracking of products, and background checks for employees. By the end of this year, Washington, D.C. is expected to have medical marijuana available to patients who need it. The Department of Health will announce on Friday the 10 cultivation centers that will be permitted to operate in the city, which will reportedly be named in June.
