D.C.’s CFO Jeffrey S. DeWitt announced this week that the city’s budget could be more than $70 million under the expected revenue, as profit from traffic camera has dropped dramatically this fiscal year. The fiscal year ends tonight, September 30, and the traffic camera revenue is at least 62 percent down from this point last year. A spokeswoman for the Mayor confirmed that fewer tickets had been issued this year, and reiterated that this was not a detrimental trend. She commented, “As we’ve said all along: the purpose of automated traffic enforcement is to improve public safety and save lives, not to raise money.” However, the effect on this drop in revenue to the budget may be large, as that money was already factored it to predictions. Revenue drops of this kind could lead to $50 million to $70 million cuts in next year’s spending.
