September 11, 2013 will mark the twelve year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The date is now recognized as a National Day of Service and calls for the work of volunteers at various events being held throughout the D.C. area to honor the fallen victims and their families.

There will be a ‘moment of silence’ held at the Courthouse Plaza in Arlington County in honor of the 184 Pentagon victims.  The event is free and begins at 9:30 a.m.

Crystal City, Annapolis and Lynchburg, Va. will host the 5K ‘9/11 Heroes Run’ at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.  There will also be a ceremony in Alexandria Wednesday at 10 a.m.  The event will be held at 301 King St. in Market Square, and although the National Park Service denied permits, the ‘2 Million Bikers to DC’ ride will take place via a secret route in D.C. Wednesday.
