U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday that he is resigning his post, and will vacate as soon as a replacement can be found. Holder, a long-time D.C. resident, was the first African-American to hold the position, and is the fourth-longest-serving Attorney General. He has spent much of his time working to strengthen civil rights protections and support legal equality for all, including the LGBT population. In comments at the annual legislative conference of the Congressional Black Caucus Friday, Holder reinforced the goals of his tenure. He stated that the Justice Department would continue to focus on eliminating restrictive voter-ID laws and proposed redistricting of voting boundaries that would disenfranchise voters. He also put himself in support of D.C. statehood, although this commentary will likely have little effect as he leaves office. Interviews have begun for his replacement, but that person will probably not be chosen until after the midterm elections.
