Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown won the Democratic primary for governor of Maryland on Tuesday. Brown beat out a field of candidates that included Attorney General Doug Gansler and state Del. Heather Mizeur. Brown has served as Governor Martin O’Malley’s lieutenant governor since 2007 and played an important role in implementing health care reform in Maryland. His campaign focused on expanding Maryland’s economy by creating a commission to study tax reform. He also says he wants to offer universal pre-kindergarten in Maryland by 2018. If Brown wins the election in November, it will make him the first black governor of Maryland.
