The National Mall in Washington, D.C. will receive a gift of $1 million from a family foundation of a Washington developer. The National Mall’s nonprofit Trust announced the donation from the Akridge Family Foundation on Monday. This is the first million dollar donation for the restoration effort of the National Mall, reported by president of the Trust Caroline Cunningham.

John “Chip” Akridge is the founder and chairman of the fundraising effort and began his work to support the mall in 2001, which officially launched in 2007. The group plans to raise $350 million privately for the mall.
