Women, African-Americans honored in new entries to VA Landmarks Registry

Virginia added 16 new locations to their official registry of historic places. The Virginia Landmarks Register recognizes historically significant locations and buildings in the same way the National Register of Historic Places does. Nominations for new appointees are sent to the National Park Service for official listing. The new entries heavily represent the significance of women and African-Americans in the state’s history. Among the honored locations: the First Baptist Church in Farmville, which served an important role in the community during efforts to desegregate schools in Prince Edward County; and North Court Hall at the University of Richmond, which was constructed when the then college expanded to include educational opportunities for women.
