The National Audubon Society hosts an annual Christmas Bird Count, and the Virginia branch of the society has begun the challenge. The count began in 1900, and is focused on gathering information about trends and the general health of the bird operation. The count involves more than 70,000 volunteers in 2,400 locations across the country, including three dozen counts in Virginia alone. The event began Sunday and will run through January 5.
