Alexandria school district officials have released a statement to police explaining that they suspect the incident reported Wednesday was never cause for alarm. At the time, the city’s schools went on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after students at Matthew Maury Elementary School on Russell Road reported seeing a man with a long gun outside their playground. Classes continued with special precautions while police combed the area. Police now say they believe the incident never happened, and that there never was such a person or threat to the school. All officials declined to say whether they believe the children made up the story, or whether they would be disciplined in response.
