The Suffolk School Board will reportedly discuss banning cross-dressing by students on Thursday evening. The Superintendent, Deran Whitney, recommends a change in the student dress code to ban cross-gender clothing that may be a health or safety hazard or that causes disruption. Thelma Hinton, the School Board Vice Chairwoman, believes it is her legal duty to ensure students have a safe environment and will not be attacked or threatened by other students for cross-dressing.
Opposing civil liberties groups believe the ban is too vague and students have the right to express themselves.
