Senator Mark Warner and former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, both Democrats, will join President Barack Obama on Friday as he makes half a dozen campaign stops in Virginia this weekend. Warner and Kaine had both been scheduled to spend the weekend at Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee events in Boston, but changed plans to support the president.

President Obama will appear in Virginia Beach, Hampton, and Roanoke on Friday. On Saturday, the president will travel to Clifton and Henrico County. In 2008, Obama became the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry Virginia in 44 years, becoming the 44th POTUS. Since then, Democrats have lost ground to rival Republicans, who won statewide elections in 2009, a commanding majority of Virginia’s congressional delegation in 2010 and the state Senate in 2011. Democrats and the Obama campaign have much work to do if they want to turn the swing state of Virginia blue again.
