Educators seek increased teacher funding

Educators in Virginia have called upon state leaders to use the upcoming special sessions to discuss funding for public schools. On Thursday, Meg Gruber, President of the Virginia Education Association, appealed to both Governor Terry McAuliffe and the General Assembly. Virginia is at risk of being unable to find qualified teachers due to low pay and reduced retirement benefits according to Gruber. Gruber’s reports show teachers earn nearly $7,500 less than the national average. She also claims that none of the budget proposals that will be considered by lawmakers during this session include the state share of salary increases for teachers.
