At approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, a CSX freight train derailed in downtown Lynchburg, spilling crude into the James River, leading to fires and causing major environmental damage. Despite the damage, deputy city manager Bonnie Svrcek views the incident with a hint of positivity, stating: “We are very fortunate that the cars that derailed [did so]toward the river, instead of the city.” 3 of the 15 derailed cars were caught in the massive flames. There is no reported cause for the crash; the investigation is ongoing.
