Jim Leyland has been the manager for the Detroit Tigers since 2006, and has led the team to two pennants in eight seasons. In a press conference on Monday, Leyland announced that he will resign: “I’m going to be 69 years old,” he said. “I’m not ashamed of that. I’m proud of it. The fuel’s getting a little low.”

Leyland will supposedly be taking on a different position with the club, but it has not been reported what that will be. “I want to retire a Tiger,” Leyland said. “So long. It’s not goodbye. And from the bottom of my heart thank you for having me.”

Leyland has had a long and successful career, with the Detroit Tigers being his fourth managerial position. He has a 700-597 record with the Tigers, and over the course of his career, has 1,769 wins. Many suspect that he will soon land in baseball’s Hall of Fame.

“What’s gone on here has been unbelievable,” Leyland said Monday. “We’ve won a lot of games, we’ve had a lot of seats filled. I came here to make talent a team, and I think we did that.”
