Republican senator calls for Sebelius to resign

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should step down because of the “disastrous” series of events with the new health care law. “Expecting this secretary to be able to fix what she hasn’t been able to fix during the last three and a half years is unrealistic,” Alexander said on the Senate floor. “It’s throwing good money after bad. It’s time for her to resign, someone else to take charge. No private-sector chief executive would escape accountability after such a poor performance.”

Many other GOP leaders are also pushing for Sebelius to resign, but President Obama is supporting her. Jay Carney, What House Spokesman, says that Sebelius has the “full confidence of the president.”

Sebelius has responded multiple times to the concerns with the new healthcare website, and promises that they will be addressed. However, solutions may not come as quickly as others would like. “The initial consumer experience of HealthCare.gov has not lived up to the expectations of the American people and is not acceptable,” Sebelius said. “We are committed to fixing these problems as soon as possible.”
