Obama announces streamlined military

President Barack Obama announced Thursday plans to reshape the armed forces and make cuts to the country’s nuclear arsenal. The new strategy, which comes after a decade of war, eliminates the ability to fight two major wars simultaneously. The plan was a reflection of the spending cuts needed in Washington, to combat slower economic growth.

The new plan calls for more Special Operations forces, as well as drone aircraft and cybersecurity. Focus will shift to Asia to counter China as a rising world power and the unpredictability of North Korea. Administration officials said a large presence would still be maintained in the Middle East, as tensions in Iran worsen. “Yes, our military will be leaner, but the world must know the United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats,” Obama said.
