At the polls Tuesday, Mississippi voters will casted votes to determine the fate of the controversial amendment that could have deeper legal implications. Amendment 26 is an anti-abortion measure that would expand the legal definition of human life to state life begins at conception, granting ‘personhood’ status to fertilized eggs. It would eliminate abortion, including cases of rape and incest.

The law would have further implications for certain forms of birth control, such as the morning after pill, and would limit hormonal birth control methods. Destruction of embryos in laboratories would also be illegal, which would call into question in vitro fertilization. If passed, the amendment would take effect before the end of the year.
