Joe Biden will visit China and Japan to discuss air zone claims

China recently claimed a large region of airspace, creating tension with Japan and South Korea. Military planes from the neighboring countries, as well as the United States, have been flying through the air zone as the dispute remains unsettled, and a mid-air crash is becoming a great concern. There is also suspicion over China’s intention to resist influence from the United States.

On his visit, Vice President Biden will encourage communication between the countries, and “make the broader point that there is an emerging pattern of behavior by China that is unsettling to China’s own neighbors,” a senior Obama administration official said. Biden will first go to Japan, a U.S. ally, and then to China to meet with President Xi Jinping and other officials.

As part of his visit, Biden will highlight the commitment of the United States to expand its policy influence, especially in the areas to which he will travel. “The message is clear and simple: The United States is a resident Pacific power, we’re here to stay, and we’re actively engaged on the full spectrum of issues in the region,” a senior administration official said.
