Commerce Secretary John Bryson resigns after recent seizure

Commerce Secretary John Bryson announced on Wednesday that he is resigning, less than two weeks after suffering a seizure he said caused him to hit two cars in Southern California, which remains unresolved. In a letter to President Barack Obama, Bryson said new leadership was needed since the seizure he suffered “could be a distraction” during a critical time for the American economy. Bryson had only been serving the position in his Cabinet post for eight months.

Bryson is the former energy executive from California and co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council. He was recruited in 2011 to Commerce to serve as an administrative liaison to the business community. Some administrative officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity in regards to the matter, admitted Bryson wasn’t as effective an advocate as they initially hoped.
