Julia Navarro, 58, of Utah, is set to give birth to her first grandchild in just a few weeks. Navarro is serving as a gestational surrogate for her daughter, Lorena McKinnon, and her son-in-law, after the couple struggled with fertility problems.
McKinnon said a friend and sister both considered carrying her baby, but after her mother offered, it eased some financial issues and would allow the mother and daughter to bond. Navarro underwent hormone shots for three months before having a fertilized embryo inserted. McKinnon said she’s had almost a dozen miscarriages with her longest pregnancy lasting 10 weeks. Navarro says she’s having a smooth pregnancy while carrying her first granddaughter and is due in early February.
