U.S. creates stronger partnerships, strategies for ‘new’ terror threats

According to U.S. government officials, developing terror threats will be a vast challenge for the country as we continue through the 21st century. The U.S. State Department documents state “new terrorist threats will require innovative strategies, creative diplomacy, and stronger partnerships.” The department, formerly known as the Office of Combating Terrorism, is now the Bureau of Counterterrorism. The bureau is designed to utilize a strong hybrid of diplomatic, intelligence, investigative, and protective tools to counteract any terror threats that may come.

With the assassination of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, Daniel Benjamin, Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism said, “For all the very impressive blows that have been dealt to that group, it still remains capable and eager to carry out attacks against the United States.” He also states, “We’re very concerned about indigenous groups like Boko Haram [a Nigerian group]hooking up with al-Qaida affiliates, learning greater tradecraft for bombings and other types of attacks.”
