Two skydiving planes collide forcing passengers to jump to safety

On Saturday, two skydiving planes crashed over Superior, Wisconsin, forcing the passengers to jump sooner than they had expected. Between the two planes, there were 11 people, and only two of them suffered minor injuries. Superior Fire Department Battalion Chief Vern Johnson reported to CNN that the two planes were flying too close together, causing one of the planes to crash into the other, shattering its windshield before it burst into flames.

“It’s definitely a reminder of the danger of the sport that we all love,” Mike Robinson, instructor with Skydive Superior, said. “Everybody got out safely. The pilot got out safely, used his emergency parachute and landed. In the trail plane, all five jumpers got out of the airplane safely and landed safely.”

However, Johnson commented that the pilot of the plane that came crashing down “was visibly bloodied about his face and shirt had one hand wrapped in a garment, but was otherwise lucid, alert and oriented.”

Skydive Superior later posted on its Facebook page, “The jumpers and pilots have been through a very surreal experience, and they are lucky and thankful to be alive.”
