New Orleans braces for Hurricane Isaac 7 years after Katrina

0

After drenching Florida, Hurricane Isaac moved northwest, launching a possible threat to a city that suffered the wrath of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Katrina made landfall along the Mississippi-Louisiana border, forever changing the region and the way officials respond to incoming storms. Tropical Storm Isaac is now projected to potentially hit the area on almost the exact same day of the month, likely as a hurricane. Local officials are taking an extremely cautious approach to weather threats.

As Isaac moved west of the Florida Keys, both Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal have declared a state of emergency in their states. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu also declared a state of emergency on Sunday afternoon, according to reports on NOLA.com. Governor Robert Bentley of Alabama has canceled his trip to the GOP National Convention in Tampa later this week. Jindal also said he will possibly cancel his speaking engagement at the convention if the threat to his state does not subside.
