Marine facing dismissal for comments about President Obama

The Marine Corps notified a sergeant on Wednesday, who has been openly critical of President Barack Obama, that he is in violation of Pentagon policy barring troops from political activities and that he faces dismissal. Sergeant Gary Stein reported his commanding officer at Camp Pendleton near San Diego has accused him of violating a catch-all military justice provision against conduct endangering “good order and discipline.” Stein is also accused of violating a Department of Defense policy limiting the political activities of service members. Stein came under scrutiny from Marine officials after stating on Facebook that he would not obey Obama’s orders.

On Facebook, the nine-year member of the Corps started a page called Armed Forces Tea Party, to persuade fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights. A few weeks ago, he affirmed that he would not follow the unlawful orders of the Commander-in-Chief and also criticized Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Stein said, “I’m completely shocked that this is happening. I’ve done nothing wrong. I’ve only stated what our oath states that I will defend the constitution and that I will not follow unlawful orders. If that’s a crime, what is America coming to?” Before engaging in any militant activity for the United States of America, every man and woman in uniform is aware that, according to Pentagon directives, military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Commissioned officers also may not use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the president. This law has stood the test of time in the American nation for more than 200 years.
