Last town shuttered by Sandy storm reopens

The Superstorm Sandy recovery effort has reached a tremendous milestone. The borough of Mantoloking is now allowing residents to move back 116 days after Superstorm Sandy. Mantoloking is situated on a barrier island and therefore suffered the full force of Superstorm Sandy when it reached the shore. The largely high-income community was shuttered after the storm swept through and damaged more than 500 houses. Of those 500 houses 60 were completely annihilated and hundreds will most likely need to be demolished. Because of the degree of damage still present and the fact that the community doesn’t normally have a large winter population, officials are not expecting many people to start moving back in the near future.
