Hurricane Isaac still pounding New Orleans

0

Hurricane Isaac, which made landfall yesterday, is still hitting New Orleans with Category one winds. The hurricane is travelling at very slow speeds and is already putting a strain on the levee system, while the eye of the storm is still of the Gulf Coast. Power companies say that 500,000 homes are without power, most of them surrounding the New Orleans area. The biggest concern is flooding; however, is the flooding. The storm surge is expected to be around 6 to 12 feet.

Isaac is hitting New Orleans seven years to the day Hurricane Katrina made its way through the city, destroying levees and leaving thousands without homes. New Orleans still has not fully recovered from the destruction of Katrina. Officials have reinforced the levee system, and this is the first real test of the new and improved levees. So far only one rural levee has failed, causing flooding in some homes. Isaac is on track to continue through to the middle of the country, which is currently experiencing a major drought.
