In response to the first confirmed case of Ebola on U.S. soil, health officials in Texas are searching out nearly 100 people who may have come in contact with the patient. Most of these people will be found not to be at risk, say officials, but the wide-cast search will hopefully isolate the threat quickly and safely. A federal official has said that “more than 12” persons who had direct contact with the patient are being carefully monitored at this time. This monitoring process means twice-daily visits from health officials to check temperature and symptoms. There is a 21-day period wherein an infected person may be contagious without experiencing symptoms. Five of the closely monitored contacts are children who attend four different schools in the area.
