Adam Mayes, the man accused of killing a mother and her eldest daughter, and kidnapping her other two, was found dead on Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two sisters, Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8, were found alive in a wooded area in Mississippi, according to authorities. “Preliminary reports indicate that Mr. Mayes shot himself in the head and was later pronounced dead,” said Daniel McMullen, FBI special agent in charge in Jackson, Mississippi.

Mayes, 35, abducted the two sisters, who he reportedly claimed were his daughters, after he killed their mother Jo Ann Bain and their older sister, Adrienne, 14. According to the FBI, Alexandria and Kyliyah were rescued by officers with the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol and state Department Fisheries, Wildlife and Parks. A federal law enforcement source on the scene told CNN the two surviving sisters “are suffering from the experience of being out in the woods and from being kidnapped. They are suffering from dehydration and exhaustion, but appear OK.” Special agent in charge of the FBI’s Memphis office Aaron Ford said, “The girls were hungry, thirsty and dehydrated.” Mayes and his wife, Teresa Mayes, had been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping. According to the affidavits filed in Tennessee, Adam Mayes faced an additional count of making a false report.
