In Aurora, Colorado, a heavily armed gunman threw tear gas into the darkness of a movie theater on Friday before releasing gunfire on the audience during a midnight screening of the new Batman movie, leaving 12 dead and 38 others wounded, according to authorities. Hospital workers say one of the injured was a 3-month-old infant. Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN that police arrested the suspected shooter in a rear parking lot of Century Aurora 16 Movie Theater. The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old James Holmes.

“He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Fania said. Police detained a rifle and a handgun from Holmes, and another gun was found in the theater. There has been no reported evidence of a second gunman, and FBI spokesman Jason Pack said it did not appear the incident was related to terrorism. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle said they were “shocked and saddened” by the shooting and pledged the administration’s support for victims of the shooting. The statement said, “As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.” The president has canceled a campaign event to address the deadly incident in Fort Myers and will return to the White House.
