Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced Wednesday that he is commuting the sentences of Maryland’s remaining four death row inmates to life in prison without parole. The announcement comes at the end of a tenure focused on the issue. Two years ago, O’Malley led the state legislature to repeal capital punishment in the state. That repeal did not apply to prisoners already on death row, which the recent order remedied. Twenty-one days are left in O’Malley’s term.
