Indonesia bans bikinis for 2013 Miss World Pageant

Miss World has gotten rid of bikinis for this year’s pageant in Indonesia. The swimsuits will be replaced with conservative beach sarongs. The change is due to escalating protests from Muslin groups.

All of the pageant’s 137 contestants will be required to wear the long sarong instead of the bikini that is an historic part of the competition. The chairwoman of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, confirmed that no contestant would wear a bikini. “We like to work in the manner respectful to every country, and I cannot see why when you go to somebody’s country you should not behave respectfully.” Morley said.

The competition begins Sept. 28th on the resort island of Bali and in Sentul.
