On Monday, Pope Francis formally authorized Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples. A document from the Vatican shares that priests should decide on a case-by-case basis and that the blessing is separate from a marriage union.
The Vatican previously barred blessings for same-sex couples in 2021 as he said “God cannot bless sin.” Francis has spoken about legal protections for same-sex unions, but not in reference to the church.
