On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would end its military presence in Niger and withdraw its ambassador. This decision comes as a result of the July coup in Niger that overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum who is currently imprisoned in the basement of his own home with his wife and son.

According to Macron, 1,500 troops will be removed from the nation by the end of the year. “Imperialist and neo-colonialist forces are no longer welcome on our national territory,” said Niger’s military junta in a statement.
