Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his role on Oct. 3 and since then the House of Representatives has been at a standstill. The legislation can not function without a new speaker elected.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-LA., and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-OH., have announced bids for the speakership. When McCarthy was elected speaker, it took 15 rounds of voting over five days. The government is scheduled to shut down on Nov. 16 if spending bills are not approved.
