Adnan Syed spent 23 years in prison after being convicted of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee before he was released in September 2022. After the popular podcast “Serial” in 2014, new hearings, trials, appeals, and an HBO documentary “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” all garnered attention toward Syed’s case, and the conviction was overturned in 2022.

In March 2023, the Appellate Court of Maryland reinstated Syed’s murder conviction and ordered a new hearing on the motion to vacate Syed’s conviction stating that the victim’s family didn’t receive the proper notice to attend the hearings before the conviction was overturned. The Maryland Supreme Court will begin proceedings on Thursday to determine whether or not Syed’s reinstated murder conviction should stand. “The terrifying specter of reincarceration has hung over Mr. Syed’s head every day for the past ten months,” Syed’s lawyer, Erica Suter shared in a court brief in August.
