U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-FL, has filed a motion to remove Speaker McCarthy from leadership position. Gaetz said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-LA, would be his replacement choice. The motion comes after McCarthy chose not to adhere to the deep spending cuts and border security of his hardline fellow Republicans for the funding bill proposal.

There has never been a speaker removed from the position through a motion to vacate, but it has been attempted before twice. “If the Democrats want to own Kevin McCarthy, they can have it, because one thing I’m at peace with is, when we stand here a week from now, I won’t own Kevin McCarthy anymore,” shared Gaetz as he spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill. In a post shared to the social media site, X, McCarthy wrote, “Bring it on.”
