Olivia Hill was sworn in on Monday night in Nashville, making her the first openly transgender elected official on the Nashville Metro Council. Hill is a Navy veteran and a former Vanderbilt University power plant senior supervisor. Tackling Nashville’s infrastructure issues such as affordable housing and public transportation are some of the first issues she plans to address during her term.

“Imagine how you would feel if you woke tomorrow and your wish came true. That’s what it’s like for most trans people once they get to a point where they transition… because you finally get to be your true authentic self and there’s really not much that could ever match with that,” Hill said in an interview with CNN. “I ran this entire race as a qualified human.”
