Ahead of vote, number of senators supporting Iran deal rises to 31

On Sunday, Oregon’s Democratic senator Jeff Merkley became the 31st senator to declare his support for the nuclear deal with Iran. The agreement, which limits Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, has been unanimously opposed by Republicans, and they have drafted a resolution against it. President Obama vetoed the Republican resolution and needs 34 votes from senate to uphold the veto. The vote will be held in early September. Merkley said that the deal has “significant shortcomings,” but that it seems unlikely that a better deal could be reached.
