ACLU lawsuit against Va. school’s transgender bathroom policy

The American Civil Liberties Union is representing 16-year-old Gavin Grimm in a lawsuit against a Virginia school board, whose policy does not allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Grimm was born female but identifies as a male. He used boys’ restrooms at Gloucester High School until the board created a policy that said “students with gender identity issues” must use the private bathrooms that they would provide. The school board stands by their decision, which they believe supports the privacy of students. The U.S. Department of Justice supports Grimm, filing a statement of interest last week that said transgender students must be able to use restrooms that correspond to their gender identity.
