Lawmakers in D.C are considering a deal for a 20,000 seat soccer stadium, for the first time. The deal calls for the D.C. government to provide $150 million of the project’s $300 million budget. The plan was announced last year by supporters, but has faced many political hindrances. With the plan, D.C. would take part in a controversial land swap that involves trading the Reeves Center on U Street to a developer for a section of the stadium site near Nationals Park. The developer will likely turn the government building into condos or apartments. The District of Colombia will also provide the team, D.C United, a handful of tax breaks on property and sales. Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration is sending the D.C. Council a legislative package this week, and if approved the stadium could be constructed and open in 2017.
